I bought my first car in august, and so far until today, everything has been great, my front drivers blinker light was out, so I went out to NAPA to go buy a new one, and it works fine, but apparently I have been driving around for the past 2 months without a hood latch. and who knows how long before that. the only thing they had in stock, or even carried in the area was the hood release cable. I took some pictures to help.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

its where the bungee cord is, that is the part I am missing, (this is on the hood).

Kinja'd!!!

here is what it should latch into.

Kinja'd!!!

it only has the little part right there.

the car is a 2000 mercury mountianeer

I'm not sure what part to look for, if you find it, could you please post it in a comment.

Hood latch STRIKER is the part you are looking for.

Edit: ebay has them:

Kinja'd!!!

It's a $35.00 part from Mercury/Ford

Go to a U-Pull or junkyard and get one. Probably the same on an Explorer.

wouldn't I probalbly kill myself in a 5000 lb SUV doing a track day? and sadly the closest track, (or even autocross) is like 2 hours away.

I don't know of any junkyards around where I live...

And search on car-part.com (2000, Mercury Mountaineer, latches). I found two outfits offering the assembly as a latch, one in Richmond, KY, one in Circleville, OH, willing to ship, $20-$30. You could call/email to make sure the striker assembly is part of the deal (and if not, can they get it out of the yard and ship it). Good luck! At least it should be an easy fix once you have the part in hand.

I'd just walk into a pick n pull and snag it and pocket the damn thing if there's a hood with it in good shape.

Probably order from E-Bay then, like Takuro pointed out. Nice thing about a junkyard is you get the bolts with it.

we drove it, and it seemed fine, I didn't have my license when we bought it, and my mom is the type who pays someone to do anything on her car, even stupidly simple stuff like changing oil, and its hard to argue with her.

so in essence, yes, you are correct.

Depends on how common the Mountaineer is in your area and your personal time/money tradeoff point. If it were me, there are not many of those vehicles around here, and even fewer in the salvage stream, so I'd spend a weekend going to all the yards in the hopes they had one (only one yard here has an on-line inventory, and it's very inaccurate). So, my cost would be the value of my weekend (mid 100s, roughly), plus about $30 in gas, plus the cost of purchasing the part (not judging, but for me I wouldn't feel right pocketing parts out of others' inventories). I'd rather have the part show up at my door. I like to think of it as efficient, but I might just be lazy (fine line between the two).

Gotcha... it should be the same as an Explorer of the same vintage but I agree, shopping online and having it delivered has its perks sometimes.

I did not know about the Explorer interchange, very cool! I haven't wrenched on a Ford in about 10 years. That would be much easier to get here. I used to see a ton of them around, but not so much the last few years. It seems like they disappeared suddenly. Kind of strange, now that I think about it.

You've got a bungee strap; what more do you need.

If you have a pull a part or similar junk yard nearby you may be able to get the parts cheaper vs. buying new.
